Dropshipping in India 2026: Is It Legal and Profitable?
In this article
    Quick answer

Yes, dropshipping is legal in India. It is a normal retail model where you sell first and a supplier ships to your customer. But you are still the seller: GST, consumer protection rules and platform policies apply to you. It can be profitable only if your margin covers ads, returns and COD losses, so treat it as a small business, not a shortcut to easy money.

You have seen reels saying “zero investment, ghar baithe store chalao.” Then someone in the comments asks “GST kahan hai?” and nobody answers. If you are wondering whether dropshipping in India is legal, whether you need GST, and whether anyone actually makes a profit, this post gives you the plain picture before you spend money on a store, ads or a course.

Not legal or tax advice. This is general information based on official GST sources as of October 2026. GST rules change and depend on your exact situation. Please consult a Chartered Accountant (CA) before you start selling.

    How dropshipping in India works

In dropshipping, you list products on your store or a marketplace. When a customer orders, you pass the order to a supplier, who packs and ships it directly to the customer. You never stock the product yourself.

There are two common setups in India:

    • Domestic dropshipping: your supplier is in India (often through a dropshipping or print-on-demand platform). Delivery is faster, COD is possible, returns are manageable.
    • International dropshipping: your supplier ships from another country. Delivery is slow, customs can delay parcels, and returns are hard. For Indian customers, this is usually the riskier choice.

Either way, the customer sees you as the seller. If the product is late, broken or fake, the complaint comes to you.

    Is dropshipping legal in India?

Yes. There is no law that bans dropshipping. It is treated like any other retail business. What makes it legal or illegal is how you run it:

    • You must follow GST rules for registration and invoicing.
    • You must follow the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020: show total price, return and refund terms, country of origin, and grievance officer details; do not post fake reviews; and refund defective or misrepresented goods.
    • You must not sell counterfeit, copied-brand or banned products. “First copy” products are a legal risk, not a shortcut.
    • If you import goods for business, you need an Importer Exporter Code (IEC) from the DGFT.

GST for dropshipping in India: the basics (2026)

This is where most beginners get confused. Here are the key rules from official sources.

    1. The turnover threshold

For businesses that supply only goods, the GST registration threshold is ₹40 lakh aggregate turnover in most states, and ₹20 lakh or ₹10 lakh in some special-category states (GST Council registration flyer). If you also supply services, the ₹20 lakh limit applies. But for most dropshippers the threshold matters less than the next two rules, because they can make registration compulsory from your first sale.

    2. Selling to other states usually needs GST from day one

Section 24 of the CGST Act lists people who must register regardless of turnover. It includes “persons making any inter-State taxable supply” and persons selling goods through an e-commerce operator that must collect tax at source (CBIC, Section 24). If your own website sells to customers across India, you are making inter-state supplies, so plan for GST registration before you start.

    3. The small-seller exemption on marketplaces

Since 1 October 2023, small suppliers can sell goods through an e-commerce operator without GST registration if they meet all conditions, including: turnover within the threshold, no inter-state supplies, selling in only one state, having a PAN, and getting an enrolment number on the GST portal (Notification 34/2023-Central Tax). Meesho, for example, opened to non-GST sellers on this basis and limits their products to intra-state buyers (Meesho).

    4. TCS on marketplace sales

Marketplaces collect TCS on your net taxable sales. The rate was cut from 1% to 0.5% (0.25% CGST + 0.25% SGST, or 0.5% IGST) by Notification 15/2024-Central Tax, effective 10 July 2024. You can claim this credit when you file returns.

    5. GST rates changed in September 2025

From 22 September 2025, GST moved mainly to two slabs, 5% and 18%, with 40% for a small list of sin and luxury goods (PIB, 56th GST Council meeting). Check the correct rate for each product’s HSN code before you price it.

Your setup GST position (general) What to do
Own website (Shopify/WooCommerce), selling all over India Inter-state supply, so registration is usually needed from the start Get GSTIN before launch; issue GST invoices
Marketplace, selling only within your state, small turnover May qualify for the enrolment-number exemption Get enrolment number on the GST portal; confirm with a CA
Marketplace, selling to other states Registration needed Get GSTIN; track TCS credit
Importing goods from abroad for resale Customs duty and IGST on import; IEC needed Talk to a CA and customs agent before ordering

Your exact position depends on your products, state and turnover. Please confirm with a CA.

Platform rules: Amazon, Meesho and your own store

Every platform has its own rules, and breaking them can get your account suspended.

    • Amazon: its drop shipping policy requires you to be the seller of record, remove the supplier’s name from packing slips and invoices, and handle returns yourself. Buying from another online retailer and having them ship to your buyer is not allowed (SellerSprite summary of the policy). Read the current Drop Shipping Policy in Amazon.in Seller Central before listing.
    • Meesho: non-GST sellers can list using an enrolment ID, but their products are shown only within their own state. You are the supplier on record, so dispatch delays, wrong items and return penalties count against your account even if a third party packed the order. Read the supplier panel terms before listing products you do not hold.
    • Own Shopify/WooCommerce store: no marketplace rules, but you carry all duties of a seller: payment gateway checks, policies, invoices and customer support.

Is dropshipping profitable in India? Realistic margins

We cannot give you an “average profit” because there is no reliable public data for Indian dropshippers, and anyone quoting one is guessing. What we can show is how to calculate your own margin honestly.

Illustrative example (not data): you sell a product at ₹999.

    Cost item Example amount Note
Supplier price including shipping ₹450 Ask for the landed price
GST on sale (if 18% inclusive) ₹152 Depends on the product’s rate; if registered, input tax credit on supplier bills can reduce this, ask your CA
Payment gateway / COD charges ₹30 Varies by provider
Return and RTO losses (spread across orders) ₹80 COD orders often get refused at the door
Ad cost per order ₹250 Often the biggest cost
What is left ₹37 Before your own time, apps and tools

See the point? A product that looks like “₹550 profit” on day one can leave almost nothing after GST, returns and ads. Profitable dropshippers usually win through one or more of these: a niche product with less price comparison, a strong creative that keeps ad cost low, a higher order value through bundles, and repeat buyers through WhatsApp or email.

For ways to bring buyers at a lower cost, read our guide on e-commerce lead generation strategies.

How to start dropshipping without big risk

    1. Pick a niche you understand (for example, home décor, pet products, regional handicrafts), not “trending products” from a reel.
    2. Order samples yourself. Check quality, packing and delivery time to Jaipur and to one far city.
    3. Talk to a CA about GST registration based on where you will sell.
    4. Start on one channel: a marketplace for learning, or your own store if you are ready for GST and ads.
    5. Test with a small ad budget you can afford to lose, and calculate break-even before scaling.
    6. Prefer prepaid orders where possible, and confirm COD orders on WhatsApp before dispatch.
    7. Keep records: invoices, supplier bills, customer consent for messages.

    Who should NOT start dropshipping

    • If you need guaranteed monthly income soon, dropshipping is not that. Early months often lose money while you test.
    • If you cannot handle customer complaints about late or damaged delivery, because they will come to you, not the supplier.
    • If your only plan is to copy a product from a viral reel and sell it cheaper. Price wars leave no margin.
    • If you want to avoid GST and paperwork completely. Some small marketplace sellers can skip registration, but compliance never fully disappears.

What changed for dropshippers by 2026

    • Small intra-state marketplace sellers can sell without GST registration using an enrolment number (since October 2023).
    • TCS on marketplace sales dropped from 1% to 0.5% in July 2024.
    • GST slabs simplified to mainly 5% and 18% (plus 40% for a few goods) from 22 September 2025, so recheck your product rates and prices.
    • Ad platforms are more automated, so creatives and offers matter more than targeting tricks.
    • Fake and incentivised reviews are being removed more actively by platforms like Google, so build trust with real buyer photos.

How to spot a dropshipping scam course

Many “dropshipping gurus” sell courses with income screenshots. Watch for these red flags:

    • Promises like “₹1 lakh per month in 30 days” or “zero investment.”
    • No mention of GST, returns, COD losses or consumer rules.
    • Pressure to buy “winning product lists” or expensive tools on day one.
    • No live practice, only recorded videos and a Telegram group.

A genuine course tells you the risks first and shows you the work.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is dropshipping legal in India?

Yes. Dropshipping is a legal retail model in India. You must still follow GST rules, the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, platform policies and trademark law. Selling counterfeit or copied-brand goods, or hiding your seller details, can create legal trouble. Speak to a CA about your tax position before starting.

Kya dropshipping ke liye GST zaroori hai?

It depends on how you sell. If your own website sells to other states, GST registration is usually needed from the start because inter-state supply requires compulsory registration. Small sellers selling only within their state through a marketplace may use an enrolment number instead. Please confirm your case with a CA.

Can I start dropshipping in India without investment?

Not really. You may not buy stock, but you will spend on samples, a store or marketplace setup, apps, and especially ads. You also need money to cover returns and refunds. Plan a small test budget you can afford to lose while you learn, rather than believing “zero investment” claims.

Is dropshipping profitable in India in 2026?

It can be for some sellers, but there is no guaranteed or average profit. GST, payment charges, COD returns and ad costs can eat most of the margin. Sellers who do well usually choose a niche, test creatives carefully, raise order value with bundles and build repeat customers. Always calculate your own margin first.

Can I do dropshipping on Amazon India?

Amazon allows drop shipping only under its policy: you must be the seller of record, remove the supplier’s details from packing slips and invoices, and handle returns. Buying from another online retailer and shipping to your buyer is risky. Read the latest Drop Shipping Policy in Seller Central before you list.

Is international dropshipping from China a good idea for Indian buyers?

For most beginners, no. Long delivery times, customs delays and difficult returns hurt reviews and repeat sales. Importing goods for business also needs an IEC and attracts customs duty and IGST. Domestic suppliers usually give faster delivery and allow COD, which Indian buyers prefer.
