Why Digital Marketing Is Growing in India: Where Budgets Are Moving
In this article
    Quick answer

Digital marketing is growing in India because businesses can measure exactly what each rupee brings, target customers by area and intent, sell and collect payment inside WhatsApp and UPI, and let AI-driven ad platforms do much of the optimisation. Digital already took 59% of India’s ad spend in 2025 and is projected to keep growing in 2026. It is not a bubble: the spending follows where customers already are and what can be measured.

If you run a business, you have probably noticed it: the agency that used to sell you newspaper slots now talks about reels and Google ads, and your competitor’s shop seems to get enquiries from Instagram. If you are a commerce or MBA student, you want to understand the economics behind it. Businesses offline se online budget kyon shift kar rahe hain, aur kya ye bubble hai? Here is why digital marketing is growing, explained as real business reasons, with numbers.

Why digital marketing is growing: the numbers first

    • Share of spend: digital was 59% of India’s total ad spend in 2025, at ₹71,621 crore, up from 12% in 2016 (dentsu report via Social Samosa).
    • Growth: the dentsu-e4m report projects digital ad spend to grow 18.6% in 2026 to about ₹84,977 crore, and reach about 70% of total ad spend by 2027 (exchange4media).
    • Another estimate: WPP Media projects digital at 68.1% of India’s ad revenue in 2026, with commerce-led advertising the fastest-growing segment at 24.2% (WPP Media).

The two reports use different methods, so their percentages differ, but both point the same way. Now, the reasons behind the shift.

Reason 1: Businesses can measure return on every rupee

This is the biggest reason. With a newspaper ad, a business owner guesses. With digital, they see impressions, clicks, calls, WhatsApp messages, form fills and sales, and the cost of each.

That changes how budgets are decided. When a CFO or shop owner can see “₹10,000 brought 25 enquiries”, they can increase what works and stop what does not, every week. Money naturally flows to the channel that can prove results. For a channel-by-channel comparison, see digital marketing vs traditional marketing.

Reason 2: Local targeting makes it useful for small businesses

A clinic in Vaishali Nagar does not need all of Jaipur, just people within a few kilometres. Digital lets a business show ads only in its area, only to people searching for its service, at the time they search. Google Maps listings and “near me” searches bring walk-ins without any ad spend at all.

This is why the shift is not only a big-brand story. Small businesses can start with a small budget, which was never possible with TV or a front-page print ad.

Reason 3: WhatsApp and UPI turned chats into a sales counter

In India, a lot of buying happens in a chat. Meta’s India head said in 2024 that about 60% of WhatsApp users in India interact with businesses weekly (Business Standard). Payments followed: UPI processed 24.07 billion transactions worth ₹29.37 lakh crore in September 2026, according to NPCI’s monthly data (NPCI UPI statistics).

Put together, a customer can see a reel, tap “Send message”, ask the price, get a catalogue and pay by UPI in five minutes. The full journey from ad to payment is digital, which makes digital ads far more valuable to the business.

Reason 4: AI-driven ad platforms lowered the skill barrier

Meta’s main campaign types are now Advantage+ sales, leads and app campaigns, where Meta’s AI manages budget, audience and placements together, and most of these settings are switched on by default in new campaigns. Google’s campaigns also rely heavily on automated bidding.

For businesses, this means a simpler start: give a clear offer, good creatives and a goal, and the platform finds buyers. It also means results now depend more on the quality of the offer, the creative and the tracking than on complex manual targeting.

Reason 5: Commerce and retail media

Customers increasingly start their product search on shopping platforms. Ads on those platforms reach people at the moment they are ready to buy. That is why WPP Media expects commerce-led advertising to grow faster than any other segment in 2026 (WPP Media). For brands selling products, this is now a regular budget line.

Reason 6: Video and creators replaced many TV moments

The dentsu-e4m report says social media took 29% and online video 28% of India’s digital ad spend in 2025, and expects online video to rise to 29% in 2026 (exchange4media). Brands that once relied on TV now buy reels, YouTube ads and creator collaborations, often in regional languages. A local creator with a loyal audience in Jaipur can be more relevant to a local brand than a national TV spot.

Business reason What it lets a business do Example
Measurable ROI Shift budget weekly to what works Stop a weak ad, double a winning one
Local targeting Spend only on nearby customers Clinic ads within 5 km
WhatsApp + UPI Ad to chat to payment in minutes Click-to-WhatsApp ad for a bakery
AI ad platforms Simpler setup, automated optimisation Advantage+ lead campaign
Commerce media Reach buyers at the point of purchase Sponsored product on a marketplace
Video and creators Regional, targeted brand building Local creator reel for a new café

“Business owners don’t move budgets because digital is fashionable. They move because they can finally see which rupee worked. Teach an owner to read one cost-per-lead report and the decision makes itself.” — Vijay Singh, Infonic trainer

    What changed in 2026

    • Commerce media became the fastest-growing line: WPP Media expects ads on shopping, quick-commerce and social-commerce platforms to grow 24.2% in 2026, faster than any other channel (WPP Media).
    • UPI volumes kept rising: around 24 billion UPI transactions a month by August–September 2026 means paying a small business from a chat is normal, not new.
    • Ad set-up got simpler: with Advantage+ as the default on Meta, a small business can launch a campaign in minutes. The hard part is now the offer, creative and follow-up, not the settings.

    Is digital marketing a bubble?

We do not think so, and here is the reasoning rather than just an opinion:

    • It follows real behaviour. People already search, chat and pay digitally every day. Ad money is following the customer, not hype.
    • It is measured. Bubbles grow where value is hard to check. Digital spend is among the most measured spend a business has.
    • Traditional media is not collapsing. WPP Media still expects TV and print to grow slightly in 2026 (WPP Media). This is a gradual shift, not a speculative rush.

Honest limits: growth rates will slow as digital’s share gets very large, ad costs can rise as more businesses compete, and businesses that run ads without a good product or follow-up will waste money. Digital makes good businesses grow faster; it does not fix a weak offer.

Is it useful for small businesses too?

Yes, often more than for big brands, because small businesses benefit most from low starting budgets and local targeting. A practical starting set for a small business:

    1. A complete Google Business Profile with photos, hours and reviews
    2. WhatsApp Business with a catalogue and quick replies
    3. An Instagram or Facebook page with regular original content
    4. A small test ad budget with clear tracking (separate number or form)
    5. A simple sheet to record where each customer came from

Many owners also get stuck on who should do this work. We cover the learn-or-hire question in digital marketing for business owners.

    What it means for jobs

When budgets move, hiring follows. Businesses that spend more on digital need people who can run ads, track results, make content and handle leads. Frequently asked questions

Why is digital marketing growing so fast in India?

Because businesses can measure results precisely, target local customers, complete sales inside WhatsApp with UPI payments, and use AI-driven ad platforms that simplify optimisation. India’s large internet base adds scale. Digital took 59% of India’s ad spend in 2025 according to dentsu, and is projected to keep rising in 2026.

Kya chhote business ke liye bhi digital marketing kaam karti hai?

Yes. Small businesses often benefit the most, because they can start with a small budget and show ads only in their area. A complete Google Business Profile, WhatsApp Business and regular Instagram posts cost little or nothing. Add a small ad test with tracking, and you will know within weeks what works.

Is digital marketing a bubble that will burst?

Unlikely. The spending follows real customer behaviour such as searching, chatting and paying online, and it is heavily measured, which bubbles usually are not. Growth will slow as digital’s share gets large, and ad costs may rise with competition, but the shift itself is steady rather than speculative.

    Will traditional marketing disappear?

No. TV and print still hold a large share of India’s ad spend, and WPP Media expects them to grow slightly in 2026. Their share is falling, though. Most businesses now use a mix, with digital as the measurable base and offline channels for local trust, events and mass awareness.

How much should a small business spend on digital marketing?

There is no fixed rule. Start with free basics like Google Business Profile and WhatsApp Business, then run a small test budget you can afford to lose while learning. Track cost per enquiry and cost per customer, and increase spend only on what proves profitable. A counsellor or trainer can help you set a starting plan.

Knowing why digital marketing is growing helps only if you act on it. Look at your last 20 customers and note where each one came from. That one exercise shows whether your budget is in the right place. For help building a measurable plan, call +91 97828-60519 or visit our Ajmer Road centre for free counselling.
