A good SEO strategy in 2026 has four parts: target the searches where people still click (commercial, local, comparison), publish original people-first content with clear answers that AI Overviews and AI Mode can cite, keep your site technically clean, and build a brand people search for by name. Measure impressions, AI visibility and leads, not only clicks, because a growing share of searches now end without a click.
“Traffic gir gaya, but my rankings look the same.” “How do I get into AI Overviews?” If you run a website or are learning SEO, you have likely felt this. The old plan of picking keywords, writing 1,000 words and building backlinks does not produce the same results now. This guide sets out an SEO strategy for 2026 based on what Google has actually published and what independent studies show, without hype or shortcuts.
What changed in search: the 2026 SEO strategy context
Clicks are harder to earn
- SparkToro, using Similarweb data, found that 68% of US Google searches in January–April 2026 ended without a click to any website, up from about 60% in 2024 (Search Engine Land).
- Independent studies of AI Overviews, for example by Ahrefs and Pew Research, found the same pattern: when an AI summary appears, fewer people click the links below it.
These are US studies. India’s pattern may differ in size, but the direction is the same: simple “what is” queries send fewer visitors.
AI search is now mainstream in India
At Google I/O 2026, Sundar Pichai said AI Overviews has over 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode, about a year after launch, has passed 1 billion monthly active users (Google keynote). In India, AI Mode already worked in English and Hindi, and Google added seven more Indian languages, including Bengali, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu, in October 2025. So Hindi and Hinglish questions are now part of AI search here too.

Step 1: Choose the right searches, not just the biggest
Because simple informational searches lose clicks to AI answers, spend more effort on searches where people still need to visit a site:
- Commercial and comparison: “best SEO course in Jaipur”, “SEO vs Google Ads for leads”.
- Local: “physiotherapy clinic near Mansarovar”, supported by a strong Google Business Profile.
- Experience-heavy questions: “is a 45-day course enough to get an SEO internship”. AI can summarise, but people still want a real expert’s view.
Keep informational content too, but write it to be cited and to build trust, not only to collect visits. Our keyword research guide covers how to pick and group these searches.
Step 2: People-first content with E-E-A-T
Google’s helpful content guidance (updated October 2026) asks whether content offers original information or analysis, goes beyond the obvious, and is written or reviewed by someone who knows the topic. It explains E-E-A-T as experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness, says trust is the most important, and says E-E-A-T itself is not a single ranking factor.
In practice:
- Use real author bylines with real profiles.
- Add first-hand experience: steps you followed, screenshots, local prices you checked, mistakes you have seen.
- Cite sources for every number.
- Update important pages when facts change, and say what changed. Do not just change the date; Google lists that as a warning sign.
Step 3: Structure content so AI answers can use it
Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimisations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode; the page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet (Google Search Central). It also says these features may use “query fan-out”, running several related searches across subtopics. So:
- Put a 2–4 sentence direct answer at the top and under each question heading.
- Cover the natural follow-up questions of a topic on the same page.
- Use clear tables for comparisons and steps.
- Avoid blocking snippets on pages you want cited (
nosnippetstops them being used).
Long, specific questions are where much AI search happens, so build your page plan around them, not only around short head terms.
Step 4: Keep the technical base clean
Indexing, speed, mobile usability, clean URLs and correct redirects are not optional. A slow or hard-to-crawl site loses on both classic and AI results. Use our SEO-friendly website checklist for the full list, and our guide to 301 redirects before you change any URLs.
Step 5: Build a brand, not just backlinks
Links still matter, but in 2026 the stronger long-term signal is a brand people know and search for. Practical ways for small businesses:
- Keep your Google Business Profile complete, with real photos and replies to reviews.
- Get mentioned in local news, industry associations and partner sites.
- Publish original data or guides others want to reference.
- Be active where your buyers are: YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn. AI answers sometimes cite pages from these platforms too.
Step 6: Avoid the shortcuts that now get punished
Google’s spam policies name scaled content abuse (many low-value pages made mainly to manipulate rankings, including through automated rewording or AI), site reputation abuse and keyword stuffing. Spam updates ran in March, June, August and September 2026. Mass-producing AI pages is the fastest way to lose trust. Our post on AI content and what Google allows explains a safe workflow.
When a client says traffic fell, we first split the data: informational pages vs service pages. Usually service-page enquiries are steady and only blog clicks dropped because of AI answers. That changes the fix completely.

Step 7: Measure beyond clicks
| Measure | Where | Why it matters in 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions and average position | Search Console Performance | Visibility even when clicks fall |
| AI feature impressions | Search Console generative AI reports (rolling out to some sites) | Shows whether you appear in AI Overviews / AI Mode |
| Copilot citations | Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance (preview) | Early view of AI citations outside Google |
| Branded searches | Search Console queries with your brand name | Brand demand grows when people see you in AI answers |
| Leads and calls | Analytics conversions, call tracking, Business Profile | The number that pays the bills |
Google’s 3 June 2026 Search Central Blog announcement says the Search Generative AI performance reports are rolling out to a subset of sites first. They show impressions, pages, countries and devices for AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover AI features, not clicks or queries. Google also says AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is already included in the normal Performance report under “Web”.

A 90-day SEO strategy plan for a small business
| Weeks | Focus | Output |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Audit | Search Console review, indexing and speed fixes, Business Profile cleaned up |
| 3–4 | Keyword and page map | One URL per topic; list of commercial, local and question keywords |
| 5–8 | Improve money pages | Service/course pages rewritten with clear answers, prices or fee links, FAQs, proof |
| 9–12 | Supporting content and brand | 2–4 genuinely useful guides; local mentions; review requests |
| Ongoing | Measure | Monthly check of impressions, AI visibility, branded searches and leads |
Who this strategy is NOT for
- Anyone wanting “page one in 15 days”. SEO takes months, and no one can guarantee rankings or AI citations.
- Businesses that need leads this week. Use paid ads alongside SEO, and plan the budget split between the two.
- Sites planning to publish hundreds of AI pages a month. That is the opposite of this strategy.

Frequently asked questions
How do I get my website into Google AI Overviews?
There is no special setting. Google says pages need to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and normal SEO best practices apply. Improve your chances by answering questions clearly near the top, covering follow-up questions, adding original expertise, and keeping the site technically healthy. Nobody can guarantee inclusion.
Is SEO dead because of AI Mode?
No. AI answers reduce clicks on simple questions, but they still rely on web pages as sources, and people still click to compare, buy and contact. SEO in 2026 shifts focus towards commercial and local searches, being cited in AI answers, and building a brand people search for directly.
Traffic gir gaya par ranking same hai, kyun?
Most likely an AI Overview or other feature now answers the query on the results page, so fewer people click even though you still rank. Check Search Console: if impressions are steady but clicks fell on informational pages, that is the reason. Focus on pages that bring leads and improve content to be cited.
How often does Google update its algorithm?
Google changes search systems constantly, but announces bigger ones on the Search Status Dashboard. In 2026 so far it has listed core updates in March and May and spam updates in March, June, August and September. Do not chase each update; keep improving content quality and site health.
Do backlinks still matter in 2026?
Yes, links from relevant, trusted sites still help Google discover and assess pages. But buying links or using link schemes breaks Google’s spam policies. For most small businesses, local mentions, partner links, press coverage and genuinely useful resources work better and are safer than chasing link counts.
Kya SEO seekhne ke baad AI search ke liye alag course chahiye?
No. AI search optimisation builds on SEO basics: indexable pages, clear answers, original expertise and trust. A good SEO course in 2026 should already teach AI Overviews, AI Mode, answer-first writing and new Search Console reports. Ask any institute to show these topics in the syllabus before joining.
