Keyword research for SEO in 2026 means finding the exact questions your buyers ask, checking what Google already shows for them, and choosing the ones your page can answer better than anyone else. Start with search intent, not search volume. Use Google’s own data first (Search Console, autocomplete, People Also Ask, Keyword Planner), then add AI prompt research, then group keywords into topics with one page per topic.
Most beginners open a tool, type one word, sort by “highest volume” and pick the top ten. Then the page gets impressions but no clicks, or no ranking at all. If that has happened to you, the problem was not the tool. It was the process. This guide gives you the step-by-step process we teach in our SEO classes in Jaipur, updated for Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT-style search.
What keyword research for SEO really means in 2026
A keyword is simply the words a person types (or speaks) when they have a problem. Keyword research is the work of finding those words, understanding the need behind them, and deciding which page on your site should answer them.
Google’s own SEO Starter Guide puts it plainly: think about the words users would search for, because a beginner and an expert often describe the same thing differently. The same guide also says Google’s language matching can connect a page to a query even when the exact words are not on the page. So you do not need to repeat a keyword ten times. You need to cover the topic properly.
What changed is how people search. They now type full questions, add their city or budget, and ask follow-ups inside AI answers. Your keyword list must reflect that.
Volume vs intent: the doubt every beginner has
“Should I target the keyword with 10,000 searches or the one with 200?” This is the first doubt in almost every batch. The honest answer: intent decides, volume only helps you prioritise.
- Informational – the person wants to learn. Example: “what is on-page SEO”. Best page: a blog or guide.
- Commercial – the person is comparing. Example: “best SEO course in Jaipur with placement”. Best page: a comparison or course page with clear details.
- Transactional – the person is ready to act. Example: “SEO course fees Jaipur”. Best page: the course page with fee table and enquiry form.
- Navigational – the person wants a specific site. Example: “Infonic Training reviews”. Best page: your reviews or brand page.
A 200-search keyword with buying intent can bring more enquiries than a 10,000-search keyword where people only want a definition. Also remember that tool volumes are estimates. Keyword Planner shows broad ranges unless you run ads, so never treat a volume number as exact.
Step-by-step keyword research process (the one we teach)
Step 1: Write down your seed topics
List 5 to 10 broad topics your business actually sells or knows well. For a coaching institute these might be “SEO course”, “digital marketing course”, “internship”. For a dental clinic: “root canal”, “braces”, “teeth cleaning”. Do not start with keywords you cannot serve.
Step 2: Mine your own Search Console data first
If your site is live, open Google Search Console → Performance → Search results. Sort queries by impressions. Look for queries where you get impressions but sit at position 8 to 30. These are words Google already connects with your site, so they are the fastest wins. Google says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is counted inside this same Performance report under the “Web” search type, as explained on its AI features and your website page.
Step 3: Expand with Google itself
Type your seed into Google and note autocomplete suggestions, the People Also Ask questions, and “related searches” at the bottom. These are real questions people ask. Write them down exactly as shown, including the odd grammar. That wording is gold.
Step 4: Add AI prompt research
Ask ChatGPT or Gemini: “I am a 12th pass student in Jaipur thinking about an SEO course. List 20 questions I would ask before joining.” The AI does not know search volume, but it is good at listing doubts from a buyer’s point of view. Check each idea in Google before you keep it. If Google shows nothing related, drop it.
Step 5: Check the SERP for every shortlisted keyword
Search the keyword yourself, in incognito mode. Ask three questions: What type of pages rank (blogs, course pages, videos)? Is there an AI Overview? Who ranks (big brands or small sites like yours)? If the top results are all government sites or giant brands, pick a narrower version of the keyword.
Step 6: Group keywords into topics (one page per topic)
“SEO course fees Jaipur”, “SEO course cost” and “how much is SEO training” are the same need. They belong on one page. Making three thin pages for them splits your strength and confuses Google about which one to rank.
Step 7: Map each group to a page and set priority
Give every topic group one URL, one main keyword, and 4 to 8 supporting phrases. Prioritise by business value first, ease of ranking second, volume third.
| Keyword group | Intent | Page type | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|
| seo course in jaipur, seo training jaipur | Transactional | Course page | High |
| seo course fees jaipur, seo course duration | Commercial | Course page (fee and duration section) | High |
| what is keyword research, how to do keyword research | Informational | Blog guide | Medium |
| seo internship jaipur for freshers | Commercial | Internship page + blog | Medium |
| seo jobs salary for freshers | Informational | Career blog | Low to medium |
Where long-tail keywords fit in this process
Long-tail keywords are the longer, more specific phrases, such as “weekend SEO course in Jaipur for working professionals”. They have lower volume but clearer intent and less competition. In steps 3 and 4 above, most of what you collect will be long-tail. That is good.
We have a separate, detailed guide on how to find and use long-tail keywords for Google and AI search, so we will not repeat the methods here.
What changed in 2026 for keyword research
- AI answers sit above results. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use “query fan-out”, which means issuing several related searches across subtopics to build one answer (Google Search Central). For you, this means covering the related sub-questions of a topic matters more than one exact phrase.
- Search Console is starting to show AI visibility. In June 2026 Google announced Search generative AI performance reports in Search Console, first for a subset of sites. They show impressions and pages in AI features, not clicks.
- AI Mode works in Hindi. Google said in October 2025 that AI Mode in India supports English and Hindi and was adding seven more Indian languages (Google India blog). If your buyers search in Hinglish or Hindi, research those phrases too.
- Clicks are harder to get on pure “what is” keywords. So give more weight to commercial and local keywords, where people still click to compare and contact.
Before you finalise any keyword, ask: “If this person lands on my page, what will they do next?” If you cannot answer, the keyword is not for that page.

Common keyword research mistakes
- Picking by volume only. High volume with the wrong intent brings visitors who leave.
- One keyword per page, many pages per topic. This creates thin, competing pages. Group first.
- Ignoring your own Search Console. Free, real data from Google about your site is better than any estimate.
- Keyword stuffing. Google’s starter guide says keyword stuffing is against its spam policies. Write naturally.
- Trusting AI keyword lists blindly. AI can invent phrases nobody searches. Always confirm in Google.
- Never revisiting. Re-check every 3 to 6 months. Queries change, especially with AI search.
Tip: a free Search Console account plus Google’s own search results can take you through steps 1 to 7 without spending a rupee. Paid tools save time; they are not compulsory. See our list of free and paid keyword research tools for 2026 to choose.

Who this process is NOT for
If you need leads by next week, keyword research and SEO alone will not deliver that. SEO usually takes months. In that case, paid ads may suit you better in the short term. We compare both honestly in SEO vs paid ads for lead generation.

Frequently asked questions
How many keywords should one page target?
One main keyword and a group of close variants and related questions, usually 4 to 8. If two keywords need different answers, they need different pages. If they mean the same thing, keep them on one page. Google matches meaning, so a well-covered topic can rank for dozens of related searches without you repeating each phrase.
Can I do keyword research for free?
Yes. Every step in this process can be done with Google’s free tools and Google’s own results pages. Paid tools mainly save time and show competitor data. If you want a tool-by-tool comparison with free limits, see our separate guide to keyword research tools.
Kya ChatGPT se keyword research ho sakti hai?
Partly. ChatGPT is very good at listing questions and doubts a buyer might have, and at grouping ideas into topics. It does not have reliable search volume data and can suggest phrases nobody uses. Use it for ideas, then confirm each one in Google search results or Search Console before you build a page around it.
What is keyword difficulty and should I trust it?
Keyword difficulty is a tool’s score of how hard a keyword is to rank for, mostly based on backlinks of the current top pages. Each tool calculates it differently, so treat it as a rough guide. Checking the actual results page yourself, and seeing whether sites like yours rank, is more reliable.
How long does keyword research take for a small website?
For a small business site with 10 to 20 pages, a first proper keyword map can take one to two days of focused work. After that, a monthly 1-hour Search Console review is usually enough to spot new queries and pages that need updating.
Kya Hindi ya Hinglish keywords par bhi research karni chahiye?
Yes, if your buyers search that way. Many Jaipur students and shop owners type mixed phrases like “seo course kitne ka hai” or speak Hindi queries into their phone. Collect these from autocomplete, Search Console and your own WhatsApp enquiries, then group them with their English versions on the same page instead of making separate thin pages.
Your next step: open Search Console today, export your top 100 queries, and sort them into the intent groups above. If you want a trainer to check your keyword map, book a free counselling call on +91 97828-60519 or try a demo SEO class at Infonic.
